Uncomfortable Oxford Tour Guides

Casual & Part-time positions -- £20/h -- apply by 13 August 2022 12:00 pm BST

About us

Uncomfortable Oxford is a public engagement organisation that aims to generate discussions about racial inequality, gender and class discrimination, and legacies of empire in the city and university of Oxford. It was founded as a social enterprise in Oxford in 2018 and has been running tours and outreach events ever since.

Our main activity consists in research and discussion-based walking tours around the city which aim to raise awareness about ‘uncomfortable’ histories and foster respectful conversations. Tours will reflect on the landscape of the city, looking behind the obvious facades and landmarks to uncover the histories of power, privilege, and inequality that have shaped Oxford over the centuries, and which continue to influence it today.

Role description

We are opening new positions in our guiding team to deliver the Uncomfortable Oxford walking tours. The tours are meant to generate dialogue within the group, with guides delivering information and then facilitating a conversation between tour participants.

We are looking for excellent communicators who are committed to bringing academic research to a public audience. We need guides who can inspire critical thinking and who are dedicated to sensitive, productive and open discussion about ‘uncomfortable’ topics including racism, gender, sexuality, class, slavery, violence and inequality.

Applicants should be living in Oxford or nearby and staying in the area for at least the next six months.

This is a paid, part-time position as a casual worker.

Pay rates start at £20/hour for guiding tours of max 1.5h, with the number of hours per week depending on tour demand.
Training hours will be compensated at minimum wage.
